Mass casualty incidents (MCIs) are emergencies that overwhelm the capacity of local healthcare systems due to the large number of patients requiring immediate medical attention. These incidents can result from natural disasters, accidents, or large-scale violence (Abubakar et al., 2024). Nurses, as frontline healthcare workers, play an essential role in disaster response by providing critical care, triaging patients, and assisting in the overall management of such emergencies. The ability of nurses to respond effectively to MCIs is heavily influenced by their preparedness, training, and resource availability (Ali et al., 2023).
In Sokoto State, a region in the northwest of Nigeria, healthcare infrastructure may face significant challenges during mass casualty events. The state's hospitals and emergency response systems are often under-resourced, which can hinder timely and effective responses to disasters (Bashir et al., 2023). Despite the critical role of nurses in managing MCIs, little is known about their level of preparedness in this region. This study aims to evaluate the preparedness of nurses in Sokoto State hospitals, focusing on their knowledge, skills, and ability to respond to MCIs.
The ability of nurses to manage mass casualty incidents is critical to saving lives and minimizing morbidity. However, in Sokoto State, there is limited research on the preparedness of nurses for such emergencies. This gap in knowledge may impact the quality of emergency care provided during mass casualty events, potentially leading to ineffective responses and increased mortality. This study aims to identify the preparedness level of nurses in Sokoto State and suggest strategies to improve their readiness for future MCIs.
This study will focus on nurses working in hospitals and emergency response units in Sokoto State. It will assess their preparedness for mass casualty incidents, including their knowledge of disaster management protocols, skills in triage, and available resources. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported preparedness levels and the availability of hospitals that handle MCIs.
